Terhaar brings extensive experience and background in neonatal, perinatal, and pediatric nursing to the clinical component of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing baccalaureate child-bearing family course and the management practicum of the school's master's program. She also serves as director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. Her emphasis in both clinical practice and education is most often directed to the effectiveness of interdisciplinary collaboration in the management of health outcomes for mothers and their infants and young children. Terhaar has published widely in the nursing literature, primarily on issues regarding neonatal care. She serves as the Hopkins nursing ambassador to the National League for Nursing. Terhaar also was a key member of the school team that developed a two-year curriculum and learning tools that now are being used as core curricula in more than 20 midwifery schools in Afghanistan, resulting in more than 1,000 trained midwives to date.
