Here’s what NKC consultants are seeing
Omitting Organizational Overview documents can now stop your review in its tracks. When an Organizational Overview document is missing, the facility has five business days to provide the missing document(s) or the review stops immediately, with fees retained. Two areas that are most likely to cause problems are the nursing education needs assessment (all levels and all settings) and the use of peer feedback tools (all levels).
- The nursing education needs assessment is NOT the same assessment required for accreditation of continuing education, and it is easy to accomplish with planning. Start with a table, listing in the left-hand column all levels of nursing staff (don’t forget the chief nursing officer (CNO)) and all settings in which nurses work (compare to demographic data collection tool or application unit listings). Across the table, create columns for Assessment Method(s), Results/Education Topics Identified, and Plan to Provide Needed Topics (with program titles and dates). Fill in the information and you are 90% there! Explain the process details and attach your actual results.
- A peer feedback tool is needed for each level—CNO, nurse leaders, nurse managers, educators, APRNs, and clinical nurses (depending on the leadership structure). Check the definitions in the Magnet® glossary to classify your team. Written tools for peer feedback are required for each level and should be completed annually in-cycle or off-cycle with the performance appraisal process. Evidence of completed self-appraisal and peer feedback to enhance competence or professional development must be in the employee file of each nurse.
